Scholarships and Financial Aid

Continuing students are required to fill out a scholarship application form each year if they wish to be considered for a scholarship. This form is available on the Forms and Procedures page and is due by January 31 to be considered for scholarships for the following academic year. 

Scholarships for Continuing Students

Willard H. Allen Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR or RHSA students
  • Based on scholarship (upper 10 percent of class), leadership, integrity, and extracurricular activities.
  • Scholarships made possible by the bequest of Willard H. Allen (’16).
 
American Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to an upper-division undergraduate student in the School of Family Studies (in odd years) and a CANR student majoring in nutritional sciences (in even years).  
  • Based on academic performance and commitment to the profession.
 
Animal Science Freshman Achievement Recognition Award
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to incoming CANR or RHSA students majoring in animal science.
  • Based on pre-college achievements in specified activities, experience, and demonstrated interest and leadership with one or more of the following: beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, or hog projects.
 
Beulah Shanley Baldwin Scholarship Fund
  • One scholarship of $500 to a student in CANR.
  • Recipient must have demonstrated community service through volunteerism
 
Richard Bushnell Leadership Award
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR or RHSA student.
  • Based on leadership activities in student organizations and academic achievement.
  • Intended to assist a student leader attending a conference, event, or other program. .
 
  CANR Dean’s Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR student based on academic achievement and student activities
   
Charter Oak Farm and Garden Association Scholarship in Plant Science
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR or RHSA student with an interest in horticulture and the environment.
  • Based on scholarship, leadership, and involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Preference given to a non-traditional student.
 
Connecticut Grounds Keepers Association Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $1,500 to CANR and RHSA students.
  • Based on academic achievement, potential for future academic and professional accomplishments, and experience in the grounds keeping industry.
 
Connecticut Horticultural Society Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $3,000 awarded to CANR or RHSA students majoring in horticulture.
  • Based on scholarship, leadership, and professional promise.
  • In memory of Ludwig Hoffman and Edwin “Pat” Carpenter, professor of horticulture.
 
Connecticut Master Gardeners Association Scholarship
  • One or more awards of up to $2,000 to an upper-division CANR student in the Department of Plant Science.
  • Preference is given to students with financial need.
 
Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association - Niel W. Pieper, DVM Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR junior who is a Connecticut resident preparing for a career in veterinary medicine.
  • Based on academic achievement and potential for future academic accomplishments.
  • Involvement in extracurricular and civic activities is also considered.
 
  Willard H. Daniels and Salvatore A. Orsini Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR student preparing to enter a career in veterinary medicine.
  • Financial need is also a consideration.
  • Willard Daniels was an Extension Veterinarian and Professor of Pathobiology. Dr. Orsini is a retired M.D., whose two sons became veterinarians and joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania
   
  B. C. Dawson Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR or RHSA student interested in greenhouse production.
  • Provided by Paul L. Hammer, Jr., a CANR and RHSA alumnus, in memory of Burton C. Dawson, a staff member of the Department of Plant Science and a local greenhouse businessman
   
  Thomas A. DiBenedetto Memorial Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR student based on academic achievement and the potential for future professional and academic accomplishments.
  • Thomas DiBenedetto was a U.S. Marine serving in Beirut, Lebanon at the time of his death in October, 1983. His parents established the scholarship because of his appreciation of animals and the land
   
  Eastern States Exposition Scholarship
 
  • One or more scholarships of up to $3,000 to CANR students
  • Based on financial need and an indication that the recipients will make a contribution to agriculture, and to the welfare of the citizens of Connecticut.
  • Preference given to Connecticut residents.
  • Provided by the Connecticut Trustees of the Eastern States Exposition.
  • The undergraduate scholarship honors Lee Marsh
   
  John Elliott Memorial Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a student in CANR majoring in landscape architecture.
  • Based on academic achievement.
  • In memory of John Elliott, County Agent, Tolland County.
   
  Harry Farnham Memorial Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to students in CANR majoring in forestry, wildlife, and game management who have demonstrated proficiency in conservation.
   
  Alan S. Farwell Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR students.
  • Based on academic achievement, potential for future academic and professional accomplishments, participation in athletic or fitness activities, and evidence of personal contribution to college expenses.
  • Endowed by Alan S. Farwell (’28).
   
  Gavitt Scholarship Grant
 
  • One award of up to $500 per semester for a student who demonstrates potential for writing and/or photojournalism and spend 5 hours per week completing assignments in one of those areas, preference given to a College of Agriculture and Natural Resources student.
  • This scholarship is made available to undergraduate or graduate full time degree seeking students through the generosity of Alexander and Patricia Gavitt. 
   
  First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR students in pre-veterinary medicine.
  • Based on academic achievement, citizenship, and financial need.
  • Provided by the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard in Hartford.
   
  Julius B. Fleischmann Memorial Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR or RHSA student with an interest in poultry production, nutrition, economics, marketing, or health.
  • Provided by the Connecticut Poultry Association in honor of Julius B. Fleischmann, an industry leader, to encourage student involvement in the poultry industry.
   
  Henry G. Haalck Memorial Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to an upper-division CANR student majoring in natural resources.
  • Based on demonstrated interest in forestry, involvement in extracurricular activities, and professional promise.
  • Established in memory of Henry Haalck, professor of natural resources.
   
  Henry & Ebba Hansen Leadership Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $400 to a CANR student with strong leadership skills and an involvement in public service and/or community organizations.
  • Established in memory of Henry M. Hansen, Associate Director, Cooperative Extension System. His wife, Ebba, was also very active in the community
   
  William Duran Holman Prize Fund Award
 
  • Awarded to the CANR junior and/or senior in animal science with the highest total grade point average
   
  Horticulture Club Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR or RHSA student in the Department of Plant Science. 
  • Based on active membership in the Horticulture Club, strong academic record, and good citizenship.
   
  Jarvis Products Corporation Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $2,500 to a CANR or RHSA student majoring in animal science with a strong interest in meat science.
  • Based on scholarship, participation in related extracurricular activities, work experience, and an intention to seek a career in the meat industry
   
  Robert E. Johnson Memorial Award in Dairy Science
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,500 to a CANR or RHSA animal science student with demonstrated interest in, and dedication to the dairy industry through leadership and participation in 4-H, FFA, dairy cattle judging, and/or dairy organization activities.
  • Academic achievement is also considered. • Established in memory of Robert E. Johnson, professor of dairy science
   
  Frances E. Osborne Kellogg Fund Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 per semester to CANR or RHSA students majoring in animal science.
  • Based on academic performance.
   
  Kinsman Family International Agriculture Fund Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR students for international study or internship.
  • Preference given to animal science students.
   
  Joseph M. Lent Plant Science Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $250 to a student in the Department of Plant Science in CANR or RHSA.
  • Based on academic and professional accomplishments, active membership in the Horticulture Club and good citizenship.
  • Established in memory of Joseph M. Lent, Professor of Horticulture.
   
  Christopher P. Marsocci Memorial Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR students recognized for notable leadership and service.
  • Preference given to an active member of Alpha Zeta.
  • Established by the family of Christopher Marsocci (’78), whose life ended tragically while he was in veterinary medical school. Christopher was Chancellor of Alpha Zeta
   
  Albert Wadsworth Meserve and the Helen Clark Meserve Memorial Trust Fund
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to CANR students interested in horticulture, arboriculture, forestry, or other fields connected with ecology, conservation, and tree care.
   
  New England Farm & Garden Association Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,800 to CANR juniors or seniors studying arboriculture, horticulture, landscape architecture, forestry, animal science, or related fields.
   
  Frank Niederwerfer Family Award in Animal Science
 
  • One or more awards of up to $250 to a CANR junior or senior majoring in animal science.
  • Based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and potential for contributions to the livestock field.
  • Provided by Frank Niederwerfer (’35).
   
  Frank Niederwerfer Family Award in Soil Science
 
  • One or more awards of up to $250 to a CANR junior or senior with an interest in soil science.
  • Based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and potential for contributions to soil science.
  • Provided by Frank Niederwerfer (’35).
   
  Russell Palen Fund Scholarship
 
  • One or more scholarships of up to $500 per semester to CANR students in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
  • Based on academic achievement
   
  Roberts Family Fund Award
 
  • One or more scholarships of up to $1,000 to CANR or RHSA students majoring in animal science or natural resources.
  • Based on leadership, service, and potential for contributions to their profession.
  • Established by Clinton Roberts in memory of his son, Warren Roberts
   
  James M. Rosa Nutritional Sciences Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to a CANR student majoring in nutritional sciences.
  • Preference given to students involved with the dietetics program.
  • Based on academic performance.
   
  A. Salmon & Sons Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $300 to CANR and RHSA students majoring in animal science.
  • Based on scholarship, industriousness, participation in extracurricular activities, and an intention to seek a career in the meat industry.
   
  Albert C. Sandelli Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $250 to CANR and RHSA students in the Department of Plant Science.
  • Preference given to a student with a demonstrated interest in greenhouse production
   
  Paul Schur Environmental Health Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR junior or senior interested in a career in environmental health or related field.
  • Preference to students with leadership and community involvement especially relating to college and university activities.
   
  Simsbury Garden Club Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR junior of senior majoring in agronomy, arboriculture, conservation, ecology, floriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture/design, or related fields.
  • Based on academic achievement.
  • Financial need is also a consideration.
  • Awarded to a resident of Hartford County, with preference given to a Simsbury resident
   
  South Windsor Kennel Club Pre-Vet Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $500 to deserving CANR students in pre-veterinary medicine.
   
  James V. Spignesi, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $5,000 to CANR students majoring in natural resources and interested in pursuing a career in wildlife conservation and/or conservation law enforcement.
   
  John B. Tucker, Jr. Memorial Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR or RHSA students for excellence in dairy cattle judging.
  • Based on performance as a member of the Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Team.
  • In memory of John B. Tucker, Jr. (‘73).
   
  University of Connecticut Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR and RHSA students in their second year.
  • Based on academic achievement, strong leadership, and service to the College.
   
  Albert E. Wilkinson Scholarship
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR student interested in plant science and planning to contribute to educational programs and community service.
  • Based on academic achievement, financial need, and potential for academic and professional accomplishments.
   
  Cornelius & Mary Jane York Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to CANR students based on scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.

   
  W. B. Young Leadership and Service Award
 
  • One or more awards of up to $1,000 to a CANR or RHSA senior showing professional interest in agriculture, food, or natural resources.
  • Based on outstanding ability and achievement in leadership and service.
  • Established in memory of Wilfred B. Young, Dean of the College 1945-1966
